My Research

My academic research, which is practice-based, focuses on issues of translation, visual culture and performance.

I'm interested in what polysemiotic media such as theatre, film and comics can teach us about the theory and practice of translation. My long-term project is to set out an internally consistent theory of translation that engages with the combination of sign systems present in these media which is, at present, poorly understood.

I studied at the University of Durham (BA 2003, MA 2005, PhD ongoing) and Birkbeck, University of London (MA 2009). At Durham, I'm currently completing a PhD, provisionally (if unimaginatively) titled ‘The Translation of Visual Literature’, on the theory and practice of comics translation.

I also have an ongoing interest in virtual culture, particularly its intersections with the visual and the development of new paradigms of communication and information exchange online.
